Protect Your Kids: Get Them Vaccinated NOW!
Michael Milobsky, MD

Michael Milobsky MD, pediatrician, vaccine advocateAs a parent, your primary instinct is to protect your children and ensure they grow up healthy and strong. In today’s world, where we are often inundated with more scary information than we know what to do with, it can be challenging to navigate the complexities of child health and parenting.

Dr. Michael Milobsky, a board-certified pediatrician with over 20 years of experience, a father of seven, and the founder of Pediatrics at the Meadows in Castle Rock, Colorado, is dedicated to helping families understand what is truly important for their children’s physical and mental well-being. Through his practice and his popular podcast, “Your Kids Will Be Fine with Dr. Milobsky,” he provides expert medical advice and reassurance to parents.

One of the most critical messages he emphasizes is the undeniable importance of childhood immunization. The science is clear, and the historical success is overwhelming: vaccines protect kids, and getting them vaccinated now is the best way to lay the foundation for a healthy life.

The Power of Vaccines and Disease Prevention

Vaccines are one of the most extensively studied and scrutinized parts of our healthcare system, designed to work with a child’s developing immune system. They function by teaching the body to recognize and defend against specific germs, preparing it for future exposure. Dr. Milobsky points out that thanks to vaccines, diseases that used to be common, crippling, or deadly—such as diphtheria, polio, and rubella—are now largely unheard of by modern parents.

In fact, we have become victims of our past success, sometimes forgetting the devastating impact these illnesses once had. By best estimates, vaccines have prevented over 500 million cases of childhood infection and over a million child deaths in the United States alone. While every parenting decision involves a risk-benefit analysis, Dr. Milobsky states unequivocally that for the vast majority of healthy kids, the disease prevention benefits of childhood vaccines far outweigh any potential, generally mild, side effects like fever or soreness at the injection site.

Debunking the Myths: MMR and Autism

A significant barrier to vaccination for some parents has been the persistent myth linking vaccines, specifically the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine, to autism. Dr. Milobsky directly addresses this controversy, noting that the 1998 study by Andrew Wakefield that suggested this link was based on fraudulent data and scientific misconduct. The study was fully retracted, and Wakefield’s medical license was revoked. In response to the initial panic, massive worldwide investigations involving over a million children were conducted. Dr. Milobsky emphasizes that every single study, no matter where it was done, showed the exact same thing: there is zero link between vaccines and autism, and specifically zero link between the MMR vaccine and autism. It is crucial for parents to rely on their doctor rather than the internet for medical advice and to have honest, empathetic, and open conversations with their pediatrician about any fears or anxieties they may have regarding vaccines.

The Tragic Reality of Measles: A Mother’s Heartbreak

Renae Archer in hospital due to complications from measles - Courtesy Rebecca Archer and NYTThe urgency of vaccination is starkly highlighted by the rising cases of measles, one of the most contagious viruses that exists. A heartbreaking opinion piece in the New York Times, titled “Measles Took My Daughter. This Is What I Want Everyone to Know,” by Rebecca Archer, underscores the severe consequences of vaccine hesitancy and the critical need for herd immunity.

Ms. Archer, a mother from Salford, England, shared the tragic story of her daughter, Renae. In 2013, during a measles outbreak fueled by plummeting vaccination rates following the fraudulent autism study, five-month-old Renae contracted the virus. Ms. Archer relied on the community’s immunity to protect her.

Although she seemed to recover from the initial infection, the virus slowly replicated in her brain. Years later, at the age of ten, Renae developed subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare and fatal complication of measles. She suffered from seizures, cognitive decline, and loss of motor function before tragically passing away just days before her 11th birthday in 2023.

Ms. Archer’s plea is a powerful reminder: refusing vaccinations doesn’t just put your own child at risk; it puts other vulnerable children, including infants too young to be vaccinated, in grave danger.

The Recommended Children’s Vaccine Schedule

To help keep kids healthy and stay ahead of serious, preventable diseases, pediatricians follow the Recommended Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This schedule is considered the ideal timeline for healthy children as their immune system develops. It provides the latest trusted guidance on when children and teens should receive each immunization, including vaccines for measles, pertussis (whooping cough), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and coronavirus. The timing for each dose is carefully based on when a child’s immune system provides optimal protection and the earliest possible time to provide protection balanced with the age the child is at highest risk for a disease.

The AAP strongly advises against spreading out vaccines over a longer period, as this leaves a child’s immune system waiting to learn and extends the time they are without protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. Multiple shots given in one visit are safe and effective, and they do not overwhelm a child’s immune system.
